Monil cattle collar and its benefits

Why top-mounted matters

Monil's collar is top-mounted by design. Sitting on top of the cow's neck gives the solar panel greater exposure to sunlight, supports reliable mobile connectivity, and helps the system track animal location and activity accurately.

  • Solar charging with no battery replacements

  • Reliable location tracking and boundary accuracy

  • Accurate movement tracking for advanced data insights

  • Durable design that stays protected from impact

Traditional fencing vs. Virtual fencing

Different tools for different jobs. Here's how the two approaches compare.

Traditional fencing

Traditional fencing

Built around physical infrastructure and manual work.

  • Requires posts and wire
  • Manual moves and repairs
  • Fixed layout
  • Visual barrier
  • Escapes can affect entire herd
  • Limited visibility into herd activity
Virtual fencing

Virtual fencing

Built around flexible boundaries and app-based control.

  • Adjust boundaries from phone
  • Create exclusion zones within boundaries
  • Flexible layout
  • Learned audio boundary
  • Escapes typically limited to individual animals
  • Real-time location and alerts

Why UK farmers choose Monil

Hill farms, upland, common grazing and leased land. Places where putting up fencing isn't practical, affordable or even allowed. Monil gives you the flexibility to graze land that would otherwise be difficult to manage.

Know where your cattle are without driving from field to field. Receive alerts when something needs your attention and keep an eye on stock during busy periods like calving, grazing changes and severe weather.

Move grazing boundaries in minutes, adapt to changing conditions and make better use of every field. Rest grass when needed, respond to weather, and adjust grazing without moving fences.

Keep cattle away from bogs, streams, newly planted hedgerows and young trees without permanent fencing. Create exclusion zones whenever and wherever they're needed.

From your first collars to everyday use, our UK team is here when you need us. Honest answers and support from people who understand farming.

Every farm is different. Some farmers want to roll out virtual fencing across the whole herd, while others prefer to start with a smaller group to see how it works. With Monil, you can get started with as few as six collars and grow from there.

Monil collars are ready to ship across the UK, with local support whenever you need it.

I calculated the cost of putting temporary fencing around all the agroforestry rows of trees, and it far outweighed what the collars were going to cost and also what it enables us to do

There are so many sites where the ideal grazing system has not been able to be used because they're just impossible to fence. Having a virtual fence means you can now graze areas you weren't able to contain before.

My morning routine is to get on the Monil app just to check everything is where it should be. We can monitor what the cows are up to straight from the kitchen table.

Because of the Monil Collars, we can now graze 2,500 acres that we haven't grazed in 15 years.

The collars have been really good. I’m away working most days, so being able to open the app and see where the cows are and that they’re moving about normally makes day-to-day management much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every herd is different, but most cattle learn the audio cue within 3–7 days. Training starts within a physical fence, allowing cattle to safely learn the relationship between the sound and the grazing boundary.

The collar uses an audio cue first. If the animal continues beyond the boundary, a short electric pulse follows. Over time, cattle typically learn to respond to the sound alone, with very few pulses needed.

Yes. The Monil app lets you see cattle locations, monitor activity, and receive alerts, helping you keep track of what's happening across the herd, even when you're away.

No. Monil uses existing mobile networks, so there are no towers or base stations to install before you get started. That means less set-up and fewer things to manage.

The answer depends on the farm, but many farmers are looking to reduce repetitive jobs like moving fences, checking boundaries and changing grazing areas. For some, that means more time to focus on herd health, grazing management and planning ahead.

Physical fencing still plays an important role around the farm perimeter, roads and other high-risk areas. Virtual fencing adds flexibility within the farm, making it easier to manage grazing and reduce the need for internal fencing.
